Why Green Up Your Space?
Indoor plants bring numerous benefits to our lives, including enhancing productivity, boosting well-being, and improving overall health. Extensive research has revealed that environments with an abundance of plants help alleviate stress, ward off fatigue, and even reduce illness. Not only that, green spaces play a pivotal role in filtering toxins and purifying the air, ensuring a healthier living or working environment for all. Just a few vibrant plant additions can transform a sterile space into a lively and aesthetically pleasing area. Furthermore, plants provide additional advantages by offering privacy and minimising disruptive ambient noise. In essence, these leafy companions bring about a myriad of advantages that contribute to a happier, healthier, and more harmonious indoor environment.
Research on the Benefits of Plants
Research about the effect of indoor greenery on inhabitants is extensive. Below are a few of the many published studies:
Kansas State University researchers proved that plants in hospital rooms speed up patient recovery. In this study, patients required less pain medication, had lower recorded heart rates, and gave healthier blood pressure readings. They also exhibited fewer general symptoms of fatigue and anxiety.
The Dutch Product Board for Horticulture showed that plants in office settings decreased absenteeism. This research mimicked a lot of other research on plants in workplaces, including some done by the Agricultural University of Norway that noted sickness rates fell by more than 60% in offices containing indoor plants. Workers in these studies reported less general fatigue, fewer colds, and fewer incidental symptoms such as headaches, coughs, and sore throats.
Part of the reason plants improve physical health is their ability to remove everyday toxins from the air. Various volatile compounds like formaldehyde are present in rugs, vinyl, cigarette smoke, and plastic bags. Benzene and trichloroethylene are both toxic substances found in man-made fibres, inks, solvents and paints—benzene in particular is a problem in settings where books and other printed materials are in heavy use. NASA research on plant-rich environments has shown that the air is cleansed of up to 87% of its volatile compounds every 24 hours in greener built environments.
